POSITIVE: It is MUCH less crowded and a much shorter walk from free parking in the Pika lot. It's like having your own private base area. The ski school here is also at the bottom meaning much easier and less hectic checkin and warmer and less windy for the kids. Better access to A-51 park also.
NEGATIVE: Not open very early in the season (before Thanksgiving) or very late in the season (April). No real village, just a traditional old-style mountain lodging with one bar, one cafeteria, one starbucks, one gift shop... you get the idea.
River Run --------- POSITIVE: Great vibe of a quintessential new-style ski village with shops, bars, restaurants, coffee, etc. Has the gondola if you like warmer rides up.
NEGATIVE: Can get very crowded. Free parkers must walk through the village (which is very nice... but if you just want to get to the slopes, Mtn House is better).
There are hundreds of lodging options at both base areas. River Run lodging tends to be nicer and newer. Mountain house lodging tends to be older, but much larger and better mountain views. Chateaux D'Mont in the Mountain house is the only ski-in ski-out with Private Hot tubs in every room! Slopeside in Mountain House is a former hotel and has the lowest prices for ski-in ski-out lodging available ANYWHERE in colorado by FAR. In River Run, the ski-in ski-out choices are Lone Eagle and Timbers. Both 5-star and FANTASTICALLY luxurious. The best in Keystone for sure.
